Patagonia
Being a vegetarian and travelling a lot always seems to be a challenge. What can I eat there or what actually do you eat there are typical questions by friends. I always think: No matter where in the world, there is everywhere Italian or Indian food around with a veggie option. And that is true, even in the worst countries to travel being a vegetarian, like, ahem, France.
When I was in Patagonia, Argentina, I first thought: That will be difficult with eating veggie style in the country that invented the steak. But, it was a very pleasant experience, because in Argentina they have real great: Pizza! Italian restaurants with a superb quality all over the nation. (Because in the beginning of the 20th century people from Italy not only immigrated to the United States, but to Argentina as well. They brought two great things to that country: their wonderful cuisine, and: Football!).
Being a veggie in Patagonia, that was an awesome experience, and I never gained any weight when traveling, except when I was in Argentina. A Pizza a day, well, that shows!
Reisen und Vegetarier sein, das ist zuweilen eine echte Herausforderung. Manchmal richtet man sich vornherein ein, dass man wochenlang Kartoffeln in allen möglichen Varianten essen wird: Pommes, Chips, baked. Mit Ei in allen Varianten. Und man könnte glauben, ein Vegetarier in Argentinien, dem Land, das Steaks vermeintlich zum Frühstück brutzelt, müsste verhungern. Aber das Gegenteil war der Fall. In Argentinien gibt es sicherlich die beste italienische Küche der Welt – ausserhalb Italiens natürlich. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wanderten erlebte Argentinien eine grosse Einwandererwelle aus Italien, und die Italiener brachten dem Land zwei wunderbare Dinge mit: Ihre Küche, und den Fussball.
Also hat der Vegetarier auf Reisen in Argentinien die Qual der Wahl – nämlich zwischen den besonders guten Pizzen, die sie hier servieren, ausnahmslos. Die argentinische Pizza ist ein wenig anders als die europäische Pizza – mit mehr Käse als Grundlage plus dann den Belag auf den Käse oben drauf. Aber der Boden ähnlich dünn wie in Italien, und fern von den gängigen U.S. Pizzen.
Sometimes you are allowed to make great pictures, and you even do not notice how lucky you are. Drive the long road from El Chalten in Argentina towards Calafate in the Andes mountains, and you might have the chance to have view on the peaks just like I did. But this only happens a very view times. There are people trying to climb the summits and wait for month to have them free of clouds…
One of the best spots on this planet, when it comes to wildlife and wildlife photography, is the Peninsula Valdes in Patagonia, Argentina. This area is often compared, when it comes to biodiversity, to the Galapagos archipelago. For wildlife photographers, Peninsula valdes means: very few people, quite easily accessible beaches and view points, good infrastructure with roads, housing, electricity. And a lot of animals, of course: Southern right whales, sea lions, Magellan penguines, guanacos, southern elephant seals, a lot of birds, dolphins, and if you are really lucky: Orcas.
Die Peninsula Valdes ist sicherlich eine der spektakulären Orte für Tier- und Naturfotografie. Als UNESCO Weltnaturerbe geschützt, bietet die Habinsel an der Küste Patagoniens spektakuläre Küsten, eine rauhe und schöne Landschaft, eine gute Infrastruktur, und viele Plätze, um sehr nah an die Tiere heranzukommen.
The only possible base on the peninsula is the little village of Puerto Piramides. From here you can do the whalewatching tours, when the souther right wales are breeding their young ones in the seocnd half of the year. They are getting very close to the boates and are not shy, so watching a whale is almost guaranteed. You can even see them from the shore.

You will need a vehicle when on Valdes, as there is no public transport. Roads are gravel roads, no tarmach, so can drive around max 60/70 km per hour. Climate: quite windy and cooly, this where Patagonia begins, so be prepared for all kinds of weather changing quickly.
All the photography spots on the coastline are clearyl marked, the elephant seals are there all year, but their numbers are changing with the season. They breed their young ones around March, and this is the time of year, when you can expect to see the Orcas coming to catch elephant seal pups from the beach, especially at Punta Norte, the northern top of the peninsula.

Die Halbinsel Valdes liegt ca. 1500 Km südöstlich von Buenos Aires in der Provinz Chubut, Argentinien. Für Tiefotografen ist sie ein Paradies: wenig Menschen, viele Tiere, man kommt sehr dicht an die Tiere heran, tolle Landschaft. An Tieren gibt es Wale (Südkaper, Delfine, Orcas), Seelöwen, Seeelefanten, Pinguine, sehr viele Vögel. Das Wetter ist wechselhaft, blauer Himmel wird schnell mal von Regenwolken abgelöst, es kann windig und recht rauh werden. Das Licht ist entsprechend schwierig, ist aber im Gegensatz zu Afrika auch zur Mittagszeit, bei blauem Himmel zumindest, sehr gut.
Die Peninsula Valdes ist nur per Fahrzeug zu erschliessen, öffentliche Transportmittel gibt es nicht. Der einzige Ort auf der Halbinsel ist Puerto Piramides, wo es Restaurants, Bars, Hotels gibt, und wo die Exkursionen per Boot zu den Walen starten und enden. Vegetarisches Essen ist in Argentinien übrigens, auch wenn das kaum zu glauben ist, gar kein Problem. Im Ort Puerto Piramides ist eine gute Infrastruktur vorhanden, es gibt sogar einen Geldautomaten.
- How to get to Peninsula Valdes: Flights from Buenos Aires domestic airport either to Trelew (with Aerolineas Argentinas) or to Puerto Madryn (with Andes Airlines).
- Once there, you can hire a car directly from the airport. Half a day of driving to Puerto Piramides. All major car rental companies are there. You do not need a 4×4. Gravel roads on the peninsula are fine, until the gate of the national park there is a wonderful tarmac road and a lot of petrol stations along the way.
- Where to stay: I liked the Eco Lodge. I heard, the National Geographic photographers use it, too.
- Puerto Piramides has plenty of restaurants, bars, some hotels, and even an ATM.
- Vegetarian food is no problem!
- The Canon sensor tends to be irritated of the white foam of the waves, so you better check your pictures! Der Canon Sensor tendiert zum Überbelichten, wenn er von der Helligkeit der Gischt der Wellen verwirrt wird, also überprüft eure Fotos…
